Generation of the High-Frequency Magnetic Field
The copper tube is bent into a specific shape (usually a U-shape or helical coil),which is tightly wrapped around the weld seam area of the steel pipe to be welded. The inside of copper tube is hollow.
High-current flow into this copper tube coil through water-cooled cables from the welder’s main power supply. Based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, there will be a intense and rapidly alternating magnetic field when the high-frequency current flows through the coil.
Induction of Eddy Currents in the Steel Pipe
This high-frequency magnetic field penetrates the steel pipe located at the center of the coil—especially around the V-shaped opening at the pipe edges.
On the basis of Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, the changing magnetic field generates eddy currents in the conductive material—especially steel pipe. There will be intense induced currents, mainly focused on the surface and edges of the pipe.
Heat Generation via the Skin Effect
High-frequency current exhibits the skin effect, which means the current tends to concentrated at the surface of a conductor.
Because of skin effect, the powerful eddy currents which generated at the edge of the steel pipe weld seam are concentrated in the extremely thin surface layer.The current flowing through the metal’s electrical resistance, there will be a great number of Joule heat (I²R heat).
Within just a few milliseconds, this heat raises the temperature of the pipe edges to a molten or plastic state, suitable for welding.
Completion of the Welding Process
At this point, the heated pipe edges are squeezed under the strong pressure of the extrusion rollers. The molten metal at both edges fuses and solidifies, which forms a solid, continuous weld seam.
